Maze Generator
The generator gives you three ways to get a maze onto paper: print directly, download an SVG, or download a PNG. Each suits a different job.
Print directly
The print button sends only the maze to the printer, without the header, controls or any other part of the page. The maze fills the printable width of the sheet and keeps its proportions. This is the fastest route for a single worksheet. Use the browser's print dialog to choose landscape for wide mazes, and switch off headers and footers if your browser adds them.
SVG
An SVG is a vector file: walls are stored as lines, not pixels, so it is sharp at any size. It is the right choice for anything that will be resized, laid out in a document, or professionally printed. Word, Pages, Google Docs, LibreOffice, Canva, Affinity and Adobe apps all place SVG files. The exported file is small, usually under 100 KB even for large mazes.
PNG
A PNG is a picture made of pixels, exported here at double resolution. It is what you want for a website, a slide, a messaging app or any tool that does not accept SVG. Printed at the size it was generated, it is sharp; enlarged much beyond that, the walls soften. If you know you need a big print, take the SVG.
Sharp walls on paper
- Line thickness: 2 to 3 for a page-sized maze, 1.5 for very large ones, 4 for young children. The slider redraws instantly so you can judge it on screen.
- Margins: the export includes a small margin, but add your own in the document so the outer wall is never trimmed.
- Greyscale: the default ink colour prints as solid black on a mono printer. Very light wall colours will print as grey; keep them dark for puzzles.
- Draft mode: switch it off. Draft printing thins lines and can break the outer wall into dashes.
Fitting a maze to a page
The maze's aspect ratio comes from its width and height in cells (and the cell style; hexes are wider than they are tall). For portrait Letter or A4, a ratio near 3:4 fits well: for example 21 by 28 square cells. For landscape, flip it. Circular mazes are square, so they leave space above or below for a title or instructions.
Batch printing
Because the link button packs the settings and seed into a single address, you can prepare a set of bookmarks and print each in turn, or open several tabs. The file names include shape, size and seed, so a folder of downloads stays organised without renaming.
